Abstract Brake noise, in particular brake squeal, is a permanent topic both industry and academia since decades. Nonlinearities play decisive role for this phenomenon. One nonlinear effect widely ignored so far that the can engage multiple equilibrium positions with severe consequences on noise behavior. In fact an automotive disk brake, essential elements carrier, caliper pad are elastically coupled each other their behavior possible. The engaged position depends, example, initial conditions, external disturbances, transient application of pressure, consequence configurations or without self-exciting characteristics friction forces result. Obviously, characteristic force necessary precondition occurrence squeal. authors recently published some corresponding results (Koch et al. FU Mech Eng, 2021. https://doi.org/10.22190/FUME210106020K ) demonstrating same operating parameters respect to pressure (i.e., torque), rotational speed temperature has influence whether squeal occurs not.
